TIGER SHOVELNOSE CATFISH – Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum
A species of nocturnal habits that feeds on other fishes and crustaceans, guiding itself by eyesight and also by means of its sensory barbels located near the chin. This fish can weigh up to 70 kg (154 lb).
CURIMBATA – Prochilodus lineatus
These fish live in shoals and have a remarkable adaptation for feeding on the river bottom, where they seek for small insects, worms and detritus. Other smaller fishes, who take advantage of the sediments revolved by the Curimbata in order to obtain their own food, frequently follow them.
PIRAPUTANGA – Brycon hilarii
Found in large shoals, they feed almost entirely on vegetable matter, being able to jump out of the water to pluck out leaf parts or fruits. They can also follow groups of Capuchin Monkeys, in search for food remains that they drop into the river while feeding on the canopy.

FRESHWATER DORADO – Salminus brasiliensis
Because this species feeds on other fishes and is situated on top of the food chain, its presence can be an important indicative of the environment’s good health. It reaches up to 1 meter (3.3 ft) and can weigh over 20 kg (44 lb).
“FLYING FISH” – Olho d’Água River, Jardim, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil
Only in the rivers from the region of Bonito this scene is possible: the water is so clear that fish like the Piraputanga (and humans too!) are able to see, from inside the water, all that happens out there, on the trees or in the sky.
